Ibiza Town sits on the southeast coast of the island. From the popular resort areas: Sant Antoni de Portmany is approximately 15 km (9 miles) to the west, Playa d'en Bossa is just 3 km (2 miles) south, and Santa Eularia des Riu is around 15 km (9 miles) to the northeast. The island is compact, so reaching Ibiza Town from most points takes under 30 minutes by private transfer.
Most visitors find that half a day is comfortable, while a full day allows you to explore at a relaxed pace. Give yourself at least two to three hours for Dalt Vila alone — the climb through the old town gates, a walk along the ramparts, and a stop at the cathedral terrace. Add time for the marina area, a meal at a harborfront restaurant, and a browse through the lower town, and a full morning through early evening is ideal.
It works well for families. Dalt Vila is genuinely engaging for children — the massive stone fortification walls, the views from the cathedral, and the maze of lanes feel more like a castle adventure than a museum visit. The harbor area has open space, casual restaurants, and a pace that accommodates different age groups. The main challenge is the uphill walk inside the old town, but the gradual ramps and stepped paths are manageable for most kids and adults.
Ibiza Town surprises most visitors. The old town, known as Dalt Vila, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a remarkably preserved medieval citadel rising above the harbor, surrounded by 16th-century Renaissance walls. Inside, you will find cobblestone lanes, a Gothic cathedral with panoramic views over the sea, and a rich Phoenician and Moorish history that stretches back nearly 3,000 years. The marina below is lined with restaurants and boutiques, and the archaeological museum holds artifacts from the island's ancient past. It is a genuinely different side of Ibiza — historic, atmospheric, and walkable.
Ibiza Town's old town is built on a steep hill with limited parking and narrow streets that are best explored on foot once you arrive. Getting there by private transfer means you are dropped directly at the harbor entrance — no circling for parking, no juggling bus timetables. Your driver handles the route while you enjoy the approach along the coast, and when you are ready to leave, your return ride is arranged around your schedule, not a fixed timetable.
Wear comfortable shoes. The streets inside Dalt Vila are steep cobblestone and uneven in places, and the best viewpoints require some walking uphill. The cathedral at the top is generally open to visitors but may have limited hours mid-afternoon. Mornings tend to be quieter inside the old walls, while the harborfront comes alive in the early evening. Bring sunscreen in summer — the upper ramparts have little shade, and the views are worth lingering over.
