Madrid's biggest celebration is the Fiesta de San Isidro in May, honoring the city's patron saint with bullfights, concerts, and street parties. Barajas Airport is about 12 km (7 miles) northeast of Madrid's city center. Under normal traffic conditions, the drive takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Metro Line 8 connects the airport directly to the city center, reaching Nuevos Ministerios station in about 20 minutes.
For international flights outside the European Union, arrive at least three hours before departure. For flights within the EU and Schengen Area, two hours is generally sufficient. Madrid-Barajas is a large airport with four terminals, so allow extra time if you need to move between terminals or if traveling during peak holiday periods when security lines can be longer.
Tipping is not obligatory in Spain, and locals often do not tip heavily. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is perfectly acceptable. For good service, leaving 5% to 10% of the bill is appreciated. Tipping taxi drivers is not expected, but rounding up is a nice gesture. In bars and cafes, leaving a small coin on the counter is common.

Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the most pleasant times to visit Madrid, with warm and comfortable temperatures ideal for sightseeing. Summers are very hot, though the city remains lively with outdoor events and festivals. Winter is cool but mild by northern European standards, and the city is beautifully decorated during the Christmas season.
Madrid is the home of cocido madrileno, a traditional chickpea and meat stew, and bocadillo de calamares, a calamari sandwich unique to the city. Tapas culture is central to daily life - order patatas bravas, croquetas, and jamon iberico at any local bar. Churros with thick chocolate dipping sauce are a classic Madrid snack, especially in the morning. The Mercado de San Miguel near Plaza Mayor is an ideal place to sample a variety.
