Montenegro is generally considered safe for visitors. Petty theft can occur in busy areas during peak season, so standard precautions apply. The Bay of Kotor region is well-traveled and visitor-friendly, and Perast in particular is a calm and welcoming destination.
Perast is an extremely compact town with a flat waterfront promenade, making it easy to walk in a few hours. However, some streets are paved with smooth stone that can be slippery, which may pose challenges for strollers and wheelchairs. The town has no cars, so it is peaceful to explore on foot.
Tipping is not obligatory in Montenegro but is appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving around 10% at restaurants and cafes is a common and polite practice, especially in tourist-frequented areas along the Bay of Kotor.
The two famous islets are the highlight: Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island with a stunning church and museum, and the natural St. George Island with its monastery. The Bujovic Palace Museum and the Church of St. Nicholas with its tall bell tower are also worth visiting in the town itself.
Montenegro uses the euro (EUR) even though it is not a European Union member. Cash is recommended in Perast, as the town is very small and not all establishments accept cards. ATMs are available in nearby Kotor.
Montenegrin is the official language, mutually intelligible with Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian. In Perast and along the Bay of Kotor, English is commonly spoken by those working in hospitality and tourism-oriented businesses.
Fresh seafood is central to the local cuisine. Try grilled fish, black risotto, and seafood stew (brodet). Local olive oil and prosciutto from the Boka Bay region are also well worth tasting. Many waterfront restaurants offer a simple but delicious menu rooted in Adriatic coastal traditions.
Late spring (May to June) and early fall (September to October) offer the most enjoyable conditions, with warm weather, calmer crowds, and pleasant temperatures for exploring on foot. July and August are hot and very busy, while the off-season months are quiet but some local businesses may be closed.
