Railay is generally very safe. The main thing to be aware of is sea conditions during the monsoon season, when waves can be strong. Jellyfish are occasionally present in the water. Standard precautions apply regarding valuables on the beach. The area is family-friendly and sees a wide range of international visitors year-round.
Krabi International Airport (KBV) is the nearest airport, about 30 minutes by car from Ao Nammao pier. It receives direct flights from Bangkok and several international destinations. Phuket International Airport (HKT) is another option, roughly two hours away by car, and offers a wider range of international routes for those who prefer more flight choices.
Top activities include rock climbing on the iconic limestone cliffs, exploring Phra Nang Cave Beach and its famous princess shrine, sea kayaking through lagoons and caves, and taking longtail boat trips to nearby islands like Chicken Island and the Four Islands. Sunsets from the west beach are considered among Thailand's best.
Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). Cash is essential in Railay, as the peninsula has very limited ATM access and most small vendors and boat operators do not accept cards. Withdraw enough baht before arriving at Ao Nammao pier. ATMs are available in Krabi Town and Ao Nang for convenience.
Tipping is not mandatory in Thailand but is appreciated. In restaurants, leaving small change or rounding up the bill is common. For massage therapists, boat operators, and hotel staff, a tip of around 20 to 50 baht is a kind gesture. Higher-end restaurants may include a service charge automatically.
Railay is only reachable by longtail boat from Ao Nammao pier, which takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Boats run regularly during daylight hours and the fare is typically fixed per person. During low tide, passengers may need to wade ashore, so keep that in mind when packing footwear and bags.
Don't miss pad thai, green and massaman curries, tom yum soup, and fresh grilled seafood. In the Krabi region, look for southern Thai specialties which tend to be spicier and richer in coconut milk than central Thai dishes. Fresh fruit smoothies and mango sticky rice are popular and widely available.
The best time to visit is from November to April, during the dry season, when the weather is sunny and the sea is calm. May through October is the monsoon season, with heavy rain and rough seas that can make boat access to Railay difficult or temporarily impossible on some days.
