The Jurade de Saint-Emilion is one of the most celebrated local events, held each spring and fall to ceremonially announce the wine vintage. The harvest festival in September is also a lively time to visit, with vineyard activities and local celebrations throughout the wine appellation.
St-Emilion is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of Bordeaux. A regional train runs from Bordeaux Saint-Jean station to St-Emilion, with the journey taking around 35 to 45 minutes and the station being only about a 20 minute walk from the village center. Driving takes about 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic, and parking is available on the edge of the village.
The village is compact and walkable, but its cobblestone streets and hilly terrain can be tricky for strollers and wheelchairs. Flat alternative routes exist in parts of town, but visitors with mobility needs should be prepared for uneven surfaces throughout much of the historic center.
Tipping is not mandatory in France, as service charges are included by law in restaurant bills. That said, leaving a few euros for exceptional service at a restaurant or winery tasting is a welcome and appreciated gesture.
Top sights include the Monolithic Church carved into the limestone cliff, the King's Tower, the Collegiate Church, and the underground catacombs. The panoramic views from the village terrace over the surrounding vineyards are also not to be missed.
France uses the euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in St-Emilion's shops, restaurants, and wineries, but it is a good idea to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local markets.
Do not leave without trying caneles, the region's famous caramelized pastries. Macarons de St-Emilion, made with almond paste, are a local specialty dating back centuries. Pair these with a glass of the village's celebrated red wines for an authentic Bordeaux experience.
Late spring (May to June) and early fall (September to October) are ideal. The weather is warm and pleasant, the vines are lush, and harvest season in September brings a festive atmosphere to the village. Summer can be busy and warm, while winters are cool and quiet.
