Norway is one of Europe's more expensive destinations. Dining out, accommodation, and activities come at a higher cost than in most other countries. Visitors can manage costs by using local cafes and markets, traveling in the shoulder seasons, and taking advantage of city cards that offer discounts on attractions and transport.
Trondheim's compact city center is easy to explore on foot. The Bakklandet neighborhood and riverside paths are pedestrian-friendly. The city also has a good network of buses run by AtB. Some hills and cobbled areas in the older parts of town can make navigation trickier for wheelchairs and strollers.
Tipping is not obligatory in Norway, but leaving around 10% for good restaurant service is appreciated. Tipping taxi drivers by rounding up the fare is a kind gesture but not required. In general, service charges are not automatically added to bills.
The Nidaros Cathedral, the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral, is the city's defining landmark. Other highlights include the colorful Bakklandet neighborhood, Kristiansten Fortress, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Rockheim music museum. The Sverresborg open-air folk museum offers a great overview of Norwegian history.
Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK). Card payments are the norm across the country and are accepted almost everywhere, including restaurants, shops, and public transport. ATMs are easy to find throughout Trondheim if you need cash.
June through August offers the warmest weather and long daylight hours, perfect for outdoor activities and the St. Olav Festival in late July. Late spring (May) and early fall (September) are quieter with pleasant conditions. Winter brings snow-covered scenery and opportunities for skiing in the surrounding hills.
Norwegian is the official language. English is very widely spoken and understood throughout Trondheim, especially in restaurants, hotels, and among younger residents, so visitors rarely experience any language barrier.
The city has a strong food culture. Try klippfisk (dried salted cod), raspeballer (potato dumplings with gravy and lingonberries), and fresh seafood at harborside restaurants. The weekly food markets and the Bakklandet neighborhood are great places to explore local cheeses, cured meats, and artisan products.
