Although Tulum has its own international airport, the Cancun International Airport (CUN) is far larger and more popular---probably why you're making the trip! Airlines aren’t known to wait around for late passengers, so book your transportation from Tulum to the Cancun Airport with a company you can trust.
Most hotels require guests to check out before 11:00 AM. If your flight does not depart until late in the evening, it is the perfect opportunity to make one last excursion to the ancient Mayan city of Coba or the El Rey ruins in Cancun. Daytrip makes all of this easy to schedule!

The Cancun International Airport (CUN) is located on the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, a short distance south of Cancun on the 307 and 180 Highways. It is the busiest airport for international flights, not only in the Cancun area but for all of Mexico. The drive from Tulum to the Cancun Airport takes about 90 minutes straight up the coast of the Caribbean Sea.
The Cancun Airport has all the standard amenities for an international airport of its size: duty-free shopping, restaurants, storage lockers, and various lounges all within a short distance of each other. It has three terminals.

It is best to have most of your items packed and sorted before going out for your last night in Tulum. You’ll be able to gauge if you have enough room to fit all of your gifts and souvenirs and save yourself precious time in the morning.
The general recommendation when traveling internationally is to arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight. Given the distance from Tulum to the Cancun Airport, aim to leave your hotel at least 4 hours and 30 minutes before departure.
Getting around the Cancun area is best done with a private car service or a shuttle bus from a company you can trust. Because of the importance of catching your flight, don’t leave your transfer to the last minute.

Shuttle buses differ in operation based on your budget and the company. The most common option is for all travelers to meet at a central spot around Tulum’s hotel zone and travel together to the airport’s two terminals for commercial flights. Calculate the cost of the taxi to the central pick-up spot when budgeting your transfer.
If you are considering getting to the Cancun Airport by shuttle bus, ask your hotel or resort about their options. Some resorts have shuttle bus options built into their vacation packages.
As you and your fellow passengers arrive at the airport, the shuttle bus will stop by each terminal. Know your departure terminal before leaving the hotel, especially if you do not have a mobile data plan for your phone.
With your transfer from Tulum to the Cancun Airport behind you, it’s time to navigate the airport. For most flights, you can check in and drop your luggage at the electronic kiosks, unless you have over-sized luggage.
Once you’ve gone through security, you’ll hopefully have time to browse the duty-free shops, fill up your water bottle, and freshen up before your flight.
The Cancun Airport has a couple of lounges from different price points, and a few are only for travelers from certain airlines or credit card memberships. It’s worth checking what your lounge options are when you do your check-in and luggage drop. But don’t get too comfortable in the lounge---you have a plane to catch!
