Australia
One of the country’s biggest and best collections of scaly creatures and arachnids will warm your heart to cold-blooded creatures.
Although not entirely devoted to reptiles, the scaly denizens of Australian Reptile Park are certainly the main draw, the biggest attractions have been the grumpiest crocodiles in Australia: Eric (1989-2007) and Elvis (from 2007). The Lost World of Reptiles, guarded by the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek, is certainly a highlight for many. Even arachnophobes appreciate the humour and intelligence that goes into their Spider World. Other attractions include the Komodo Dragon Exhibit, Nocturnal House, Frog Hollow (including the infamous cane toad), Platypus House, and the Alligator Lagoon with over 40 adult alligators living together relatively peacefully (they’re less aggressive than their crocodilian cousins). The park is the sole supplier of snake venom for use as an antivenom, saving thousands of lives; funnel-web spiders are milked for the same purpose. As Australia has 9 of the 10 most venomous spiders and snakes in the world it is no small contribution to the nation.
