Wealth from the gold rush has graced this inland city with magnificent architecture.
Ballarat began its journey as a small sheep town and grew into a prosperous mining settlement during the gold rush just like many other towns in the region. Unlike the others, rich alluvial goldfields sustained the area into the 20th century. The abundance of gold allowed the town to grow into a large city as people came from all over to share the wealth. Extravagant buildings were built which earned the city the nickname “The Golden City.” Restoration and preservation of historic buildings is encouraged and residents are dedicated to the upkeep of the wide streets, sweeping gardens and all of the Victorian-era buildings. Wander Sovereign Hill, an open-air and living museum that demonstrates what life was like at the start of the gold rush in Ballarat. See how much the town has changed!
