Banan Temple

A steep set of steps brings visitors to this beautiful hilltop temple, which was once thought to be the precursor to Angkor Wat.

About

Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, Banan Temple was long thought to be the prototype for Angkor Wat because of its 5 tower layout, though most scholars now agree that it was built after Angkor. Perched atop a verdant hilltop, the temple buildings are in remarkably good shape, though like most other Khmer temples, have been looted of many of their treasures. After climbing the steep stairs you’re treated to fantastic views of the surrounding countryside as you circumambulate the temple hunting for the beautiful sculpted details. Nearby is the Prassat Banan vineyard, Cambodia’s only winery, which produces an especially unusual shiraz as well as a brandy. We’d recommend adding time to your stop if you’d like to stop by the vineyard.
