This slowly crumbling village is surrounded by a UNESCO-listed palm farm.
Birkat al Mauz was once a thriving village at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar mountains. However, much of the population has moved from the old town, leaving it to slowly decay in the sun. The handful of people still living amongst the ruins make for an interesting contrast. After you’ve explored the town streets, head to the town’s namesake palm farm to cool off while exploring its shady walkways. The palms are still watered using a traditional aflaj irrigation system, which has received UNESCO recognition for its cultural importance.
