One of England’s newest cathedrals stand on the site of one of its oldest places of worship.
Blackburn Cathedral as it stands today wasn’t completed until 1977 when the last piece of stained glass was secured in its modernist lantern tower. However, the cathedral’s legacy stretches back over 1000 years, and even some of the building’s elements are centuries old. The cathedral nave is actually the 19th century church, while the eight misericords in the north transept date back to the 15th century. Blackburn Cathedral is also home to a fantastic collection of religious artwork, notably the 35 foot ‘Healing of the Nation’ sculpture on the facade. Throughout the year the cathedral hosts special events ranging like free lunchtime recitals with visiting musicians. For more information, please visit blackburncathedral.com/
