Learn about Brazil's booming coffee industry in its lavish former coffee exchange.
Housed in the lavish “Palace of the Official Coffee Stock Exchange”, the Coffee Museum is a fascinating monument to the cultural, political, and economic impact of Brazil’s coffee industry. The “Coffee Palace” itself opened in 1914 and was essentially the financial center of Brazil - think the New York Stock Exchange, but with coffee, and remained an active trading floor until 1950. Crowned by a 120-ft tall clock tower, with Ceres, goddess of agriculture, and Mercury, god of commerce, keeping watch at the entrance, the interior is an opulent blend of inlaid marble, jacaranda wood, and stained glass ceiling. Walk through the two-floor museum to learn about Brazil’s coffee industry through photography and dioramas, as well as the accouterments of trade like scales, sacks, tasting tables. When you’re done, head downstairs to sample coffees from around Brazil in a beautiful cafe. For more information, please visit https://www.museudocafe.org.br/en/
