Ecuador
With a wealth of architecture on its original 16th century street plan, this UNESCO-listed city is famous as the main producer of the Panama hat.
Founded in 1557 on the site on an indigenous settlement, Cuenca has grown from a valley village to the third largest city in the country. Over this time, its historic center stuck to its original Spanish colonial plan, with some of its buildings receiving 19th century makeovers courtesy of wealth from exports like quinine and straw hats. Cuanca’s main square is the best place to experience its architectural beauty. At one side, you’ll find the “Old Cathedral” - an elegant 16th century building that serves as the Museum for Religious Art. Opposite this is the “New Cathedral”, which was begun in 1885 but took 90 years to complete. One of the largest churches in South America, visitors a free to explore its cavernous interior, and can even climb to its blue-domed roof. For even better views, you can head to the Turi Viewpoint on the hill overlooking the city.
