Poland
The beautiful Baroque monastery made its own slice of paradise, surrounded by quiet walking trails and historic hermitages.
In 1629, shortly after the Discalced Carmelites arrived in Poland, Agnieszka nee Tęczyńska Firlej founded a monastery for them in the quiet woods near Czerna. The Church of St Elijah was completed in a few years, and the entire monastery finished in 1650. Today, the early Baroque monastery is a place of peace and beauty. Along with the monastery proper, the quiet walking paths through the grounds bring visitors past 17th century hermitages, caves, and the heart-shaped Spring of St Elijah, from approx. 1640, which is fondly known as the Spring of Love.
