Both ingenious and whimsical, this subterranean complex was one man’s ingenious solution to not being able to farm his land.
The Forestiere Underground Gardens were built solely by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere in the early 20th century. Finding the 80-acre plot of land he purchased was unsuitable for farming, he began digging hoping to find fertile soil. When he hit a layer of impermeable clay 10 feet down, he began creating an underground warren. On a guided tour, you’ll pass through patios, grottoes, and garden courts where a variety of plants grow from large planters, all interconnected with passageways likely inspired by his first job digging the tunnels for Boston’s subway. The gardens are filled with fruit-bearing plants ranging from oranges to kumquat, which can be easily plucked by just heading up to ground level, while grapes grow in great clumps pretty much everywhere. Along with creating a whimsical atmosphere, having the garden underground helps beat the oppressive heat of Fresno’s summers making it a literally cool place to visit. Please note: the Forestiere Underground Gardens are closed when it’s raining, and reservations are required for groups of less than 15 people.
