A sprawling complex of small Hindu temples situated on the slopes of Mount Ungaran offers a magnificent mountain panorama and insight to the past.
Known for its simply breathtaking views, Gedong Songo Temple consists of nine temples spread across the higher parts of the mountains in Central Java. On clear days, the horizon offers a mesmerizing sight of volcanoes stretching from Mount Lawu in the east to Mount Sumbing, Mount Sundoro and Dieng Plateau in the west. Explore the temples by following the stone path uphill or opt for a horse ride provided by the stables near the first temple. The horse handlers will accompany and guide you along the way. The journey will take you through picturesque pine forests and verdant vegetable fields until you reach a resting area to explore the nearby temples amidst the mist enveloping the mountain. Built around the 8th century by the Sanjaya Hindu Dynasty, the temple complex holds great historical and archaeological significance. Entrance to the temple is RP 75,000 and is open from 6AM to 6PM daily.
