Slovakia
Blending architectural styles and built to exacting specifications, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the last of its kind.
Built in 1725, this articulated church’s amphitheatre-style arrangement allowed as many as 1,100 worshippers to fit inside among the Baroque paintings and organ . According to historical records, over 300 wooden churches were built in Slovakia. Of these, fewer than 50 remain from 16th – 18th century, and only five are Evangelist articular wooden churches like the one in Hronsek. A law passed at the time only allowed 2 churches be built per region. Rigorous construction requirements required they be completed within a year, be made entirely from wood and not use metal nails. Hronsek is unique in that it’s the only wooden church in Slovakia with Scandinavian architectural influences, such as the beam connections and the arrangement of the columns. These features have contributed significantly to the structure's longevity, but it’s unknown how they ever arrived in Hronsek.
