This historic country house was where almost-Nobel Laureate Karen Blixen was born, grew up, and penned her award-winning book Out of Africa.
The Karen Blixen Museum is housed in the 17th century home where Karen Blixen was born, grew up, and after having spent years living in Kenya, returned to do most of her writings. Her book Out of Africa, was adapted into an eponymous film, starring Maryl Streep, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay Adaptation. The house’s rooms are almost exactly like Karen left them, offering an intimate look into the life of the renowned author, including some furniture from her African including Denys Finch Hatton’s favourite chair, and the chest given to her by her butler, Farah. One of the only rooms to be changed is a small gallery where her paintings, African portraits, and drawings from when she was an art student are exhibited. The house’s 40 acre property, where the author is now buried has been set aside as a bird sanctuary in accordance with her wishes.
