North Macedonia
This medieval monastery has preserved historic its Christian and Islamic elements.
When the 14th century Holy Mother of God Immaculate monastery burned down in 1558, the monks escaped through underground tunnels. Today, the structure is one of the finest monasteries in the country. Of its many icons, some of which date back to the middle ages, the miraculous ‘Flying Virgin’ is the most famous. According to legend, it was sent away on multiple occasions, but would fly back to its place in Kicevo Monastery. The monastery’s 19th century church is the largest of its kind in the country. Within the church, visitors will find exceptional frescoes, an opulent iconostasis, and even rare books like the 14th century The Four Gospels and 15th century The Psalter. The other section of the church, the one without frescoes, was a Muslim sacral space that has been preserved from the Ottoman era.
