Albania
Home to Albania’s largest carnival, this pleasant city, with its cafes and French villas, is an atmospheric place to explore and unwind.
A small settlement in the 13th century, modern Korce’s history began in the 1480s when it was redeveloped by Sultan Mehmet II’s son-in-law. Korce grew quickly at the turn of the 20th century, and today is the 6th largest city in Albania. At the heart of the city is the Cathedral of the Resurrection, the largest Orthodox church in the country, which was built on the site of an older church destroyed during the Communist regime. Spread out behind the church is Korce’s old town, a pleasant tangle of cobbled streets lined with French villas and traditional townhouses - the perfect place to sip some Turkish coffee and soak in the atmosphere. The city’s rich culture is well-preserved in its slew of first-rate museums, including the Education Museum, which is housed in the first Albanian school building, and the exceptional National Museum of Medieval Art.
