Czechia
Marvel at some of the most beautiful and unique architecture in the Czech Republic at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Extensive silver deposits lured a flood of settlers to Kutna Hora in the 13th century, and within a few decades, the town had become the seat of the Czech national mint and financial center of the country. This wealth funded a slew elegant buildings, from burgher homes to beautiful churches and even a palatial college. Stroll along the immaculately-preserved medieval street of Ruthardka, and try to pick out the details of the Plague Column or oversized Stone Fountain. Towering above the cobbled streets, the Cathedral of St. Barbara stands as one of the finest religious buildings in Central Europe. Dedicated to the patron saint of miners, the blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture is a telling testament to its 500-year construction. Right next door, the Jesuit College with its gardens and art gallery is a perfect attraction, rain or shine. But Kutna Hora's most unique monument lies on the outskirts of town. The Bone Church, or Ossuary, showcases a revolutionary interior design: bones and nothing but the bones of the dead, from the 'noughts and crosses' floor to chandeliered ceiling.
