Chile
This impressive natural arch stands as a testament to the sheer power and majesty of the relentless Pacific Ocean.
La Portada, which translates from Spanish as "The Gateway," is a natural arch on the coast of Chile, located 11 miles north of the port city of Antofagasta. Standing at 130 feet tall, this imposing offshore arch, the centerpiece of a 31-hectare protected zone, is among the most breathtaking sights in the area. Covered with marine sediments and anchored on a solid volcanic base, the stack has been carved into its arch shape by the stormy Pacific Ocean. The site can be reached easily via a short westbound detour from the main highway. Once there, visitors can explore a small museum and enjoy cliff-top views of the neighboring beaches. The arch is bordered by coastal cliffs, also molded by marine erosion, reaching heights of up to 170 feet above sea level.
