Bathe in the natural beauty of Crete’s only freshwater lake.
Snuggled in a valley and surrounded by the hills of the White Mountains, you'll find Lake Kournas, Crete's only freshwater. The lake attracts visitors because of its scenery, of course, and its wildlife inhabitants who can be observed from a rented pedal boat or canoe. It’s possible to swim in the lake, that is if you don’t mind bumping into fish, eels or a turtles. Thanks to the crystal clear water that also changes color throughout the day, you won’t miss your new friends! Birds and ducks in particular also inhabit the lake, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to say hi to them too. On the hills and along the bank stand tavernas offering apaki (smoked pork) and giftshops with pottery, produce and clothing. Depending on the water levels, the lake even has sandy beaches, which sounds good enough to pay this place a visit.
