Estonia
Brilliant birds and flowering flora are in abundance at this protected area in western Estonia, complete with historic farmsteads and fishing villages in a callback to traditional Estonian rural life.
Matsalu National Park is home to the breathtaking Matsalu Bay and its coastline, the Kasari River delta, and nearly 50 islands and islets. It is one of the most important wetland bird areas in Europe, with the land being officially established as a park in 1957 to protect the birds and their nesting. Every spring, over two million waterfowl pass through the 4,000 hectares of Kasari meadow - the largest preserved flat meadow on the continent. Vibrantly coloured Orchidaceae grow among oak and hazel trees in the wooded meadows, making for a spectacular scene for plant-lovers to lose themselves in. Matsalu National Park is also known for its cultural heritage, with several historic farmsteads and fishing villages dotting the area. Get a glimpse into traditional Estonian rural life by exploring these villages on foot or by bicycle, and head to the Visitor Center for a permanent exhibition. The Center is open 15 April to 30 September, Mon to Fri from 9.00 to 17.00 and Sat to Sun 10.00–18.00, then 1 October to 14 April, Mon to Fri, from 9.00 to 17.00, except on public holidays.
