Brunei Darussalam
In a serene area filled with luscious greenery, the mausoleum of a sultan and the archaeological remains of an important cultural site are brought together as a reflection of Brunei’s rich heritage.
The Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah and Kota Batu Archaeological Park stand as two remarkable historical and cultural landmarks in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Covering an extensive area of 120 acres, the park serves as a hub for archaeological research and investigations, providing insights into Brunei's rich history from the 14th to the mid-17th century. The shaded walkways offer visitors excellent views of the dig sites and the surrounding natural beauty. Within the park's grounds lies the Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah, a tribute to the former Sultan who ruled during Brunei's Golden Age. Sultan Bolkiah's forty-year reign (1485 to 1524) marked an era of prosperity and expansion for Brunei. Under his leadership, the Bruneian Empire expanded its territory to Seludong (now modern-day Manila in the Philippines) and extended its influence across Borneo island. Both the Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah and Kota Batu Archaeological Park are testimony to Brunei's rich history, cultural heritage, and significant role in regional trade and politics during ancient times.
