Moore Town is a tiny but significant historic town located in the highlands of eastern Jamaica. It is home to the descendants of independent communities of former runaway slaves known as Maroons. The Maroons, brought from West and Central Africa, established the settlement to rebel against the expanding plantation system of the British. Their heritage is rich and diverse, with traditional religious ceremonies, a UNESCO-protected language and drumming style, and a unique political structure that includes a system of communally-held treaty lands. The town offers visitors a chance to learn about the rich history and heritage of the Maroons and witness the unique practices that have been passed down for generations. It's a great opportunity to get a deeper understanding of Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage. Finish off your cultural immersion with a dip at the beautiful Nanny Falls right outside of town.
