Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s history, and especially the life of its national hero, is detailed in this fascinating free museum.
The Museo Historico Cultural Juan Santamaria is named after Costa Rica’s national hero, Juan Santamaría, who died defending the country against the invasion of William Walker’s filibuster army. The museum is housed in a 19th century armory-cum-prison, and details the country’s history from the first European settlers through the 1800s. Special attention is of course given to Juan Santamaría and the battles of Santa Rosa, Sardinal, and Rivas. The museum tells its story through historic artefacts and documents, as well as paintings and informative videos. The museum also hosts temporary art exhibitions, special events, theatre performances and evening concerts. For more information, please visit www.museojuansantamaria.go.cr
