Palmela

This charming small town he heart of Portugal’s wine country is rich in culture and scenery.

About

Named after its Roman founder Cornelius Palma, the town is dominated by the Moorish stronghold on the hilltop. Following the reconquest in the 12th century, the castle as was constructed, and is now a solid example of the military architecture of the time. According to local lore, the Bishop of Évora died a painful death in the dungeon here as punishment for his part in a conspiracy against King João II. A monastery was also added later, and has been painstakingly transformed into one of Portugal’s most desirable historic hotels. While in Palmela, try to make time to sample its award-winning wine, and its savoury Queijo de Azeitão cheese, be it from a restaurant, or just buying some from a shop.
