Colombia
Colombia’s agricultural capitol is the country’s chief sugar producer.
The third largest city in the region, Palmira is known as the agricultural capital of Colombia, growing coffee, rice, corn, tobacco, and most significantly, sugar cane. In fact, the city is home to the country’s most important sugar mills. This not-too-big city doesn’t have much in the way of historic monuments, but offers a great place to immerse yourself in “real” everyday Colombian life. Just head to Plaza de Bolivar, grab some street-food, and watch the world go by under the tropical trees before going over to admire the beautiful, red brick cathedral that dominates one end of the plaza.
