Slovakia
The third-largest city in Slovakia, Prešov has a history as wide and varying as it’s people, who are a mix of Slovak, Polish, Ukrainian, and Ruthenian.
Located in Eastern Slovakia, this medieval farming-turned-mining town is home to a number of popular tourist attractions such as nearby castles, pools, and the historic town center. The old town showcases Baroque, Rococo, and Gothic architecture, blended together to create an impressive mix of history and culture. The first written mention of the city took place in 1247, while habitation of the area dates as far back as the Paleolithic period, and continuous settlement dating back to the 8th century. A dominant feature in the spindle-shaped town square is the Parish Church of St. Nicholas from the mid-14th century, with its tall tower reconstructed in Gothic style. A contender for the European Capital of Culture in 2013, Prešov is a city worthy of exploration during your travels through Slovakia.
