Cuba
Watched over by a UNESCO-listed fortress, Cuba’s former capital is fast and feisty, with a historic center that preserves its proud past.
Founded in 1514, and first governed by conquistador Hernán Cortés, Santiago de Cuba has long been one of the island’s most important cities. It was the capital of Cuba, the focal point of the Spanish-American War, and the starting point of Fidel Castro’s communist revolution. With such a rich history, Cuba’s second largest city has no shortage of attractions. A great place to start your visit is the Céspedes Park and the Museum of the Historical Cuban Atmosphere, the elegant Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Cathedral, and the Casa Diego Velázquez House nearby. If you love history, there are a number of house museums scattered around the charming historic center, and the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia Graveyard is the final resting place of several local heroes. Or head up to the Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca Castle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site isn’t just an impressive fortification - it’s also a fantastic viewpoint and informative museum! Santiago de Cuba is also known for its lively music - nearly every Cuban music genre from salsa to son started here, and they continue to pulse through the streets.
