Built directly into a rock face, this unique village is famed for its stoic defense during the Christian reconquest.
There is evidence of people living rocky cliff face of Setenil de las Bodegas for thousands of years, though it wasn’t until the Moors arrived in the 12th that the town developed. Using the natural protection of the cliffs, they were able to withstand repeated attacks during the reconquest. According to some translations, Setenil de Las Bodegas refers to the seven attacks it took the Spanish to conquer the town. The other translation of the town’s name refers to the local wine’s underground storage facilities. Regardless of the meaning, a walk through the town’s white houses is an amazing experience. An entire block of houses is sheltered under an enormous boulder, another level of houses is built on top of it.
