Argentina
Surround yourself in indigenous heritage in this UNESCO-listed valley.
Nestled in the Quebrada de Humahuaca valley, surrounded by the Altiplano and Sub-Andean foothills, Tilcara has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. These rugged mountains create a dramatic backdrop for the town where colorful indigenous traditions thrive. If you’re visiting in August, you’ll be able to see this first hand in the annual festival dedicated to the Incan goddess Pachamama. But no matter when you visit, you’ll want to explore the ruins of Pucará de Tilcara. Built in the 12th century by the Omaguaca tribe, this pre-Hispanic hilltop fortification’s strategic location offered panoramic views of the valley, giving inhabitants plenty of time to prepare for any approaching enemies. Now, it offers visitors one of the best vistas in northern Argentina. Along with walking among the historic dwellings, there’s a small museum on site where you can learn how this indigenous tribe lived while the small botanical garden showcases the region’s indigenous flora.
