Nestled in Simon’s Town is Boulder’s Beach, home to a colony of around 3,000 African Penguins that got their start with just two breeding pairs in 1982. The penguins are endangered, but this colony provides protection and increases public awareness of the breed through regulated tourism. There are viewing platforms along the boardwalks that offer incredible views of the penguins, with the spring breeding season boasting glimpses of tiny chicks in their burrows. Swimming amongst the chicks is allowed with supervision, but the water is very cold. Access hours vary by season, with the beach typically open from 7:00 to 19:30 during the peak summer months. Within Table Mountain National Park, the Cape Point (Cape of Good Hope) Nature Reserve is one of the most dramatic and biodiverse landscapes in the region. The Cape Point is a stark rocky promontory with a lighthouse and famous Cape of Good Hope sign, which visitors can access on foot or by a short funicular ride. Throughout the reserve’s many beaches and hiking trails, visitors can see an impressive array of flora and fauna. From the unique vegetation to the baboons, ostriches, bontebok, and even Cape mountain zebras, there is no shortage of wildlife to admire. Chapman’s Peak Drive is about 56 miles (9 km) long, hugging a mountainside above the Atlantic’s crashing waves. This gravity-defying road offers some of the most dramatic views in the world, with plenty of pull-off viewpoints for photography. There are also charming sites on either end of the route, with Noordhoek Beach’s uninterrupted white sands at the southern end, and Hout Bay, a quaint harbor town, at the northern end. Note: While Daytrip’s professional drivers do everything in their power to ensure a smooth ride, this road features over 114 curves, so travelers prone to motion sickness may want to skip this stop or prepare accordingly.
