Main attractions • The world's best land-based whale watching destination — southern right whales enter Walker Bay between June and December to calve and nurse in the sheltered waters directly below the cliff path, approachable to within metres of the shore and visible in extraordinary numbers at peak season in September and October • The Old Harbour cliff path runs the full length of the town above the bay — a 12km walk with uninterrupted ocean views, whale spout sightings throughout the season and the best vantage points for watching whales breach, lob-tail and nurse calves in the shallow water below
What to eat • Fresh snoek (a firm, oily Cape fish) braaied over open coals at the Old Harbour market; perlemoen (abalone) is the local delicacy — try it at Burgundy Restaurant overlooking the harbour
