Stop: 1 hour - admission not included
Nestled in Simon’s Town is Boulder’s Beach, home to a colony of around 3,000 African Penguins that got their start with just two breeding pairs in 1982. The penguins are endangered, but this colony provides protection and increases public awareness of the breed through regulated tourism. There are viewing platforms along the boardwalks that offer incredible views of the penguins, with the spring breeding season boasting glimpses of tiny chicks in their burrows. Swimming amongst the chicks is allowed with supervision, but the water is very cold. Access hours vary by season, with the beach typically open from 7:00 to 19:30 during the peak summer months. Daytrip is loved all around the world. Here's why.
Cape Point lies approximately 40 miles south of Cape Town, about an hour's drive along scenic coastal roads. Boulders Beach is en route in Simon's Town. The entire round trip covers roughly 80 miles. Your private driver navigates the route while you enjoy spectacular ocean views and dramatic coastal scenery characteristic of the Cape Peninsula.
Plan for about two hours to explore Cape Point properly. The dramatic rocky promontory features a lighthouse and the famous Cape of Good Hope sign, accessible by foot or a short funicular ride. The reserve offers numerous hiking trails and beaches where you can spot unique vegetation, baboons, ostriches, bontebok, and Cape mountain zebras. The biodiversity here is remarkable within Table Mountain National Park.
Yes, this trip works wonderfully for families. Children are fascinated by the penguin colony, and Boulders Beach offers safe viewing from boardwalks. The Cape Point area provides various activity levels, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. Wildlife spotting keeps kids engaged. The beaches and scenic viewpoints appeal to all ages. The round trip takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes, manageable for most families.
Both Boulders Beach and Cape of Good Hope require entrance fees, which are not included in your private transfer. Visit the SAN Parks website for current pricing and operating hours, which vary by season. Summer months typically offer extended hours from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Planning your visit timing around these hours ensures you maximize your experience.
Cape Point Nature Reserve hosts impressive wildlife diversity. Baboons are common, so keep food secured and maintain safe distances. You might spot ostriches, bontebok antelope, and the rare Cape mountain zebra. Marine life includes seals along the coastline. Birdwatching opportunities abound with numerous seabird species. The unique fynbos vegetation supports this rich ecosystem within the reserve.
The Boulders Beach colony began with just two breeding pairs in 1982 and has grown to around 3,000 African Penguins. These endangered birds find protection here, and regulated tourism increases public awareness. Viewing platforms and boardwalks provide excellent photo opportunities while protecting penguin habitat. Spring breeding season offers chances to see tiny chicks in their burrows. Swimming near penguins is allowed with supervision, though the water is quite cold.
Spring in South Africa, from September through November, brings spectacular wildflower blooms to the Cape Peninsula. The fynbos vegetation bursts into color, complementing the already dramatic coastal scenery. Weather is generally mild and pleasant. This timing also coincides with penguin breeding season, offering chances to see chicks. The combination of flowers, wildlife, and comfortable temperatures makes spring ideal.
