Mexico

Celeya

Small and unknown, but makes you leave with a mouth open into a big “WOOW”

About

Founded in 1571, Celaya played an important role in 19th-century Mexican history when it changed hands several times during Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain. Despite having a turbulent past, today Celaya is attracting visitors seeking out relaxation and break from the crowds of big cities. Stroll through the historic downtown, admire elegant neoclassical Temple of Carmen. This simple church brings together a variety of techniques and styles and it's the only one of its kind in the world. Take a picture of Bola de Agua, the iconic symbol of the city and visit Museum of Mummies with 59 naturally preserved bodies from a cholera outbreak that hit Guanajuato way back in 1833. Before you leave, don’t forget to taste Cajeta, traditional caramel based sweets made with goat's milk and Mexicans favorite!
