Santander
This ancient city is still a fishing village at heart, offering fresh seafood alongside historic monuments, but with a taste of super-modernity.
About
First settled by the Romans, Santander as it stands today wasnāt mentioned until the 11th century. Since then itās been closely tied with the sea, playing an important role in trade with the New World. In the 19th century it became a popular destination for beach-goers, who still flock to its long, sandy beaches. On weekends, visitors can tour King Alfonso XIII summer residence with a distinctly English flair. In 1941, a major fire destroyed much of the cityās medieval center, though the massive cathedral survived. Bordering on austere, it was built during the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. In the crypt, which was the original church, a glass floor exhibits the remains of the original Roman settlement. At the Sardinero, the cityās main beach, visitors can walk the promenade lined with belle epoch hotels, restaurants, and a famous casino, and stop for some of the cityās famous seafood.
