Bac Fortress

This UNESCO World Heritage nominee has played a key role in securing transport and trade in the region.

About

This ancient fortress has been nominated as a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is the second significant fortress built on this site since 873. The current Bac fortress was first mentioned in historical texts around the 12th century, although it appears to have been rebuilt in the 14th century under the rule of King Charles Robert I. The fortress and the wider town of Bac were important crossroads for transportation and trade at the time, as people passing through from the Balkans and Mediterranean would have traveled here. The 14th-century version of the fortress featured 8 towers that can still be seen today. The fortress saw a great deal of conflict in the later centuries and was even mined with explosives and left nearly destroyed during the Rákóczi's War of Independence. The fortress was restored and is now one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in Serbia.
