Italy
This picturesque medieval town is filled with monuments made by the many empires that have controlled it over the centuries.
Though settled since Roman times, Castrovillari didn’t make it into the history books until the 11th century, when it was conquered by the Normans. Over the centuries, Castrovillari was ruled by a rotating roster of empires, including the Spanish and French, each of which left there mark on the city. The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Castello, was founded by the Norman Roger in 1090, though it has since received a Baroque remodelling. The facade has retained its Romanesque portals, while inside is an array of artwork from the 14th through 18th centuries. The 15th century castle dominating the old town was built by the Spanish King of Aragon, and still bears their coat of arms. Today, it frequently hosts festivals and cultural events, and along with housing the local archaeological museum. While exploring the charming maze of cobbled alleys, be sure to stop to sample the humble regional cuisine, which puts a heavy emphasis on the excellent local olive oil.
