This national monument to nature is so massive that an entire castle and a mill fit inside its walls!
Pesna Cave has the largest entrance in the Balkans, with an incredible span of 55 feet (16.8 m) by 171 feet (52.4 m). The interior ceiling reaches a staggering height of 164 feet (50 m), and despite the cave’s large size, sunlight still streams all the way to the back of this 405-foot-deep (124 m) cave. It has a seasonal spring that only erupts after heavy snowfall or rain and flows from its origins in the back of the cave into the open air. The castle and mill inside the entrance of Pesna Cave are said to have been the fortified home of King Marko’s sisters during the late 1300s, and Pesna is named after one sister. While the cave is no longer the home of princesses, it is still home to colonies of bats and swallows.
