This monastery is nestled into the surrounding mountainscape and shrouded in natural mystery, while its interior holds plenty of religious and historical significance.
The surrounding wilderness deeply secludes the medieval structure of the Sopocani Monastery, granting it an air of mystery. King Uros I endowed this complex in the late 1200s, and the original Church of the Holy Trinity has remained standing since this initial construction. The iconic bell tower and additional chapels were added on during the 14th century, with some damage occurring during conflicts of the 16th century. The main church is something of an optical illusion, as it appears to be a standard basilica with three naves, but is actually built around a singular nave and looks considerably different than expected once inside. The complex is filled with vibrant frescoes that have been well preserved to date, featuring scenes such as the “Death of Queen Mother Ana Dandolo” as well as depictions of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and a series of saints.
