Incredibly well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site encourages travelers to step back in time to learn about the lives of ancient farmers
This incredible UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most important remnants of tradition in the Al-Baha region. The mountaintop location, at the summit of White Mountain, lends the village unmatched views of the surrounding farms and has contributed to its unique configuration. The village gets its name from a permanent water source nearby, a spring that follows the nearby mountains down to several reservoirs historically used by the village. This archaeological treasure is a fantastic example of carefully preserved traditional structures and acts as a snapshot of the ancient forms of farming that were eradicated during the 20th-century agricultural revolution. The most popular cultivars were bananas, lemon, Kadi, basil, and peppers. Visitors can explore the remaining polished stone buildings set within the protective mountain-scape and learn more about what life might have been like for farmers here during the 8th century CE.
