Get close to nature on the hiking trails of Mavrovo National Park as you follow in the footsteps of Lazar, the first citizen of Lazaropole
Legend says that Lazaropole was founded after the inhabitants of Glavino Selo ran from the Turks into the local cave, Kalina Dupka. Only one man, Lazar, survived the invasion. He founded Lazaropole instead of returning to Glavino Selo. Lazaropole is looking its best in the summer when the hiking trails are the most alive. Hikers can visit the archeological site of its mother-village, Glavino Selo, and the 984-foot-deep (300 m) cave of Kalina Dupka. For the best success at finding these sites, it is recommended to find the GPS coordinates before starting your hike and to rely on these more than the sparse signage. If you prefer to stay in Lazaropole, the most prominent structure is the Church of St. George. This orthodox church was built in the 1840s and features a protective rampart. It is a national cultural monument for its incredibly detailed frescoes on nearly every surface of the interior.
