Selon Mark Twain, ce plus grand château de l'époque des Croisades en Israël est la plus noble des ruines.
Nimrod Fortress was built in the early 13th century in anticipation of an attack on Damascus by the armies of the Sixth Crusade. At the end of the century, after the Muslims had conquered Akko and effectively ended Crusader rule of the Holy Land, the castle lost its importance and fell into disrepair, and was completely ruined by an earthquake in the 18th century. Though the fortress is a shadow of its former self, it remains an impressive sight thanks to its massive masonry and phenomenal position. After passing through the monumental gate, a giant lintel is adorned with an oversized inscription referencing the Beibars’ 1275 reconstruction, and a stone carved panther. From here, a sign-posted path leads you through arched passageways and vaulted chambers, past everything from reservoirs to medieval toilets. While excellent views abound, the best panorama of the fortress and surrounding area comes from atop the Keep.
