Église Precista à Bacău

Situated at the crossroads of major Moldovian trade routes, Stephen the Great decided to build a noble residence for his son in the thriving market town. Completed in 1491, the Princely Court was also home to the Precista Church. Built in the traditional brick style of the age, the church survived the trials of time, undergoing a series of renovations in the 17th century. Today, the church is the oldest standing building in the city, and visitors can see the remains of the royal residence and defensive tower that once stood near it. The interior was left bare until 1854 when the frescoes were first added. Since then, they have been rebuilt or restored several times, most recently in 1979. The church’s collection of icons is in large part thanks to the donations of the parishioners, which have been carefully arranged so as to be harmonious in color and style.
