If you’ve ever smoked a Marlboro, West, or Camel cigarette, odds are you’ve already had a piece of Prilep
Tobacco is the traditional cash crop of Prilep due to the long periods of sun exposure it receives as a hillside town and its sandy soil. Prilep’s tobacco crop is sought-after by major tobacco companies for its high quality and continues to be a significant source of revenue for the city. But tobacco isn’t Prilep’s only vice! Pivofest, or Beer Fest, is an annual tradition held for four days in July, during which domestic and foreign beers are tried and celebrated in the town square. As you walk around, beer and cigarette in hand, you’ll see Prilep has all the greatest hits of a south Balkan city: an architectural blend of Ottoman, Orthodox, and Austro-Hungarian styles and ruins dating back to Roman times.
