Radio Kootwijk

Visit the village named for its largest structure and main employer: Radio Kootwijk. This nearly abandoned radio transmitter beckons urban explorers and tech junkies alike.

About

Radio Kootwijk is a relic from Dutch colonialization in modern-day Indonesia. From the 1920s to 1998, Radio Kootwijk transmitted information locally and worldwide to the empire. Its main structure, Building A, or “the Sphynx,” is almost all that remains from the radio complex after it was abandoned and replaced by improved communication technology. Its Art Deco design with Cubist elements is typical of the era and blends functionality with style. Radio Kootwijk is now part of the State Forestry Service, and the park surrounding The Sphynx is open to the public. Radio Kootwijk’s interior is only occasionally open for tours and private events. It offers public tours, tailor-made tours, and “Full Moon Walks,” during which you can watch the sunset from the tower.
