Israel
Cette ancienne ville, la plus élevée d'Israël, est l'une des quatre villes saintes du judaïsme.
Safed is believed to have been founded in the 15th century BC or earlier, and between the 6th and 1st centuries BC, was one of five elevated locations where fires were lit to announce the New Moon. The city served as a crusader stronghold and regional capital for centuries, but rose to fame in the 16th century when many Jews from Spain relocated here. Among these were prominent rabbis who made the city a center of Kabbalah. Today, Safed’s old town is an enchanting jumble of cobbled streets that hark back to the 16th century. The white-washed houses have their doors and windows painted blue to confuse evil spirits, and the many synagogues are beautifully decorated with large murals. While most of the city is highly Orthodox, the small Artist’s Quarter gave birth to many of Israel’s most celebrated artists and remains lined with galleries.
